Even though mystery shopping is a big business these days, not many people actually know what it means. However, in order to become a mystery shopper it is actually fairly simple and it could be really rewarding too. As well as earning a little extra money and being able to get products for free, mystery shopping allows you to help out businesses which want to improve. You will usually work for a mystery shopping company and as a mystery shopper you will be assigned various stores to evaluate.

Every mystery shopper has the same goals - working covertly to increase a company’s sales, reduce risk of liability, making employees more aware of the customer, and improving customer satisfaction. All of this is done using a special process in which the mystery shopper would take on an assignment, go to the business anonymously, and gather all of the required information. Then, the mystery shopper is required to complete a form, submitting it to the company hired by. In turn, this company will perform an analysis of the information, followed by a plan or recommendations to the customer on improving operations and performance.

While the overall goal is the same among all mystery shoppers, the methods that are used and the overall strategy that is employed may differ based upon the specific businesses that are selected to shop. For example, the process of mystery shopping would be different in a restaurant than in a hotel.

The way in which you get rewarded for your mystery shopper work will vary from company to company. Usually if you work for companies in the hospitality industry, you will be reimbursed to a certain amount. Other companies will offer you a flat fee. So you will need to look into this before you sign up. It is also possible for a mystery shopper to be reimbursed and paid a small fee too, however these companies are quite rare.

In order to become a mystery shopper you will need to have a few certain qualities. These include being honest, being able to keep information confidential and you will also need integrity. Usually transportation is also required and you should speak English unless otherwise stated. As a mystery shopper you may also be required to have your own equipment such as a digital camera and a cell phone. However some companies will provide you with these if they are needed.

The last key set of skills that a mystery shopper should possess would be strong communication along with strong listening skills so that you can engage in dialogue with the people within the business that you are shopping. To compliment your communication ability, the ability to be professional can also play an important role when you are performing the role of a mystery shopper.
