It is often true to say that remodeling the master bedroom is one of the last places in the home that receives a makeover but it has become one of the most desirable on homeowner’s lists. However, it is only in recent years that people have started to place more effort in the decoration of this room which for some is also a reading room, a sanctuary or even treated like a relaxed study. In this part of the world we are a little behind Europe, they have been using the bedroom for much more for a long time; the French and Italians have always seen it as sensual place for example.

If you are looking to give it a sensual feel then you need to consider certain colors that will help achieve this like shades of cream, peach, pink and red. If you are fond of candlelight then the addition of strategically placed mirrors will give a dramatic effect that could not be done with conventional lighting. Of course to improve upon this and enhance the atmosphere further you will need the subtle use of mirrors and candles along with some beautiful tropical plants; I am sure you can see the appeal to this already.

The problem is getting the lighting just right as you do not want to have really bright lights in a bedroom but softer more relaxed shades that will not strain the eyes but still make it easy to read. Traditionally to achieve the best effect in a room for reading in you should look towards the softer shades of ivory, amber and slate blue. If your preference is have a room that can be used purely to relax in then remodeling the master bedroom will mean the addition of mirrors combined with extra pillows and landscape paintings; which should help to provide this effect.

Generally a relaxing lounge chair with a floor lamp and table will also work well if you want to use it as a reading room as well. This feeling of sanctuary which you are hoping to achieve when you remodel your master bedroom can be helped by having family photos spread around the room, but in period frames which help provide that sense of history. To provide a finishing touch and create a room that suggests comfort and security, try choosing the darker shades of blue, brown or green.

For those who want a more functional room, adding a small bureau or writing desk will achieve this but there is no reason why a small television cannot also be placed in there as well. You can even add a refrigerator providing you can find a suitable cabinet to conceal it and often a small tea or coffee service will complete the effect. As you spend time remodeling your master bedroom in a way that reflects your lifestyle, it can be a worthwhile project and who knows, you may find yourself spending even more time in this often undervalued room.
