The desire for women to adorn themselves with rich things goes way back into the dim reaches of our past. It was not the ancient Egyptians who thought it up, nor the Romans or Greeks. Almost from the time people decided clothes might be a wise choice, women revealed the instinct to accessorize!

Back pain is a common problem among Americans aged 45-65 years. In fact, it afflicts 65 million of us at some time in our lives. The good news is that back pain is not often serious, and it can often be managed at home without a doctor visit.

You know how you cannot wait for your birthday to arrive when you are little kid? It seems like an years pass before it’s “your day” again. When you are little you count off the days on the calendar, make extensive lists of what you want, beg your folks for a blow out of a party, and then on the big day you get overexcited and wild and eat birthday cake till you puke.

Do you have a son or daughter who is behind in math? Maybe it is a third grader who resorts to slowly counting on his fingers while his classmates long ago memorized their lists of addition and subtraction problems. Or perhaps your daughter refuses to memorize all those “boring” multiplication tables. Maybe the confusing steps of long division problems are too hard. Sometimes, the procedures for the equations they are being taught is foreign to today’s parents.

Many big events bring friends and families together. The majority of them, like weddings, graduations, and birthday parties, are very lively occasions. Few are as significant, however, as a newborn in the family. Defying hospital rules limiting visitors to two at a time, family members and friends swarm into the exhausted mother’s hospital room. Packed like sardines, they gather around the bed, cooing over the tiny bundle everyone insists on passing around. Sometimes there is a territorial preschooler strutting about showing off “my baby!” The glow in the room in palpable.

Humans in this era take a lot for granted. Take tableware, for instance. It seems so rudimentary a concept. Today, no one would dare to sit down to a bowl of chili with no utensils, but in the grand scheme of things, tableware was a late development. After all, people had ten fingers for transferring food from plate to mouth. What could be better?
